Blind Man Walking in the Sun

IN THE SUMMER OF THAT YEAR my father took long walks in the sun, in the blackness of his space, with all its’ enveloping shadows. And though his dog guided him safely through all the noise and chaos of the crowds and traffic, the fear of it never left him.

People who saw him walking in the sun said “Isn’t it wonderful. He gets along so well.” My father went out walking every day in the sun, pushing against his darkening shadows. And, I never heard him complain. He had become a man of great courage and sorrow.
