STUDIO II JERUSALEM (see contact page)

IN 2011, AFTER A LONG ABSENCE. David Schmidt returned to his studio.  Upon his return, the first theme he addressed was the QUARTET, four diplomats who came to Israel periodically and malevolently.  These portraits, were first exhibited in the U.S. at H gallery.

THE ISRAELI SOLDIER.
In the six years to follow, David created MESIRUS NEFESH, the extensive series Of large-scale prints now numbering over 72) based on the severe challenge, the training crucible, our soldiers are required to face, endure and overcome.

In order to develop this suite, new techniques needed to be developed.  And that process continues as the series is on-going. Mr. Schmidt and his wife made aliah 22 Years ago and reside in the Old City of Jerusalem.  Four of their children and all 19 grand children reside in Israel.  Two of their sons have served in the IDF.

Excerpt from IN THE SUMMER OF THAT YEAR

“After graduating from UCLA Department of Fine Art, I acquired studio space in Venice, California where many of my former art professors had space. Venice in those days was, in general, a haven for the poor as well as artists / sculptures / poets / writers / politicos / musicians / bikers / hobos / run-a-ways and misfits.

In those days, the rich and famous would come down to Venice Beach from the hills of Bel Air and the Palisades or from inland – Beverly Hills and Pasadena – looking for the next super star. I sold almost everything I made. Who knew? They probably thought that what they were hoping for might be me.

My wife and I got married on Venice Beach with many of those mentioned above in attendance. No one believed it was real. Thought we were shooting a movie. That a white picket fence would emerge from the sand. I loved Venice.

But, after a few years. all that fell apart. Venice became Melrose at the beach. I went into business.

It didn’t take long for me to developed consulting clients in L.A. and along the eastern corridor. In time, my clients list included advisers to Presidents (U.S. Presidents), leading academics / scientists / Nobel aspirants / corporate executives.

I wrote serious papers. I advised the Pentagon. I did this for a long time. And, then, just as I had left Venice, I left business.

Studio 1 was Venice. Studio II is Jerusalem. In Venice my subject matter were alleys and night light. In Jerusalem, my subjects are THE REBBE, MY FATHER and the Jewish soul. But, for the most part, OUR BOYS the Jewish soldier.

Jewish soldiers are steel with awesome endurance and with such sweet souls. They are OUR BOYS. Not just my sons, but all of them. They are all OUR BOYS. And when one falls, G-d forbid, the whole nation mourns.”
